ProCurve Networking by HP has an infrastructure-based NAC approach that is far simpler to configure, administer and acquire than other solutions in the industry. ProCurve leverages 802.1x clients and identity management to provide identity driven access control. They have development hooks into NAP/NPS which will provide integration with Microsoft in the late 2007/2008 time frame. In establishing their information technology (IT) networks, companies have traditionally focused on the connection between user devices and the corporate infrastructure, ignoring the unique needs of individuals and groups using the network. Not only does this emphasis hinder workforce productivity, it also creates problems for network security, management and performance.

A new strategy is to implement identity driven management (IDM) functionality that is able to automatically configure the network edge through security and performance policies defined on a centrally administered management server. These IDM solutions facilitate business-driven networks that behave uniquely and appropriately for every user. This paper describes traditional network access management strategies and defines ProCurve Networking by ProCurve´s approach to a new, identity driven methodology. While business decision makers are increasingly layering real time applications such as voice and video over their IP networks thanks to its economic and business value, technical professionals have grown increasingly alarmed at the performance of their converged networks. It turns out that many have not assessed their IP networks to support real time flows and thus find performance degradation of their new converged networks robbing them of benefits originally sought. As performance falls, technical managers try tweaking configuration setting on switches, routers, communication managers, wide area services, appliances, and buying more local and wide area bandwidth to alleviate the problem. All the while the business decision makers scratch their heads and wonder, at times out loud, did we make the right decision?

Nick Lippis interviews Andre Kindness, ProCurve Networking by HP on their largest product announcement to date. In this podcast I ask Andre to give us the bottom line on their new 5400, 3500, 6200 and 10 Gb modules for their 8100 core switch. One of the key points here is the integration of Power of Ethernet, network security and enhanced mobility features built into their 3rd generation of ProVision ASCI. As usual I give my take on the announcement at the end of the podcast.
