Cisco is fundamentally changing the way it approaches network  by prioritizing R&D to deliver a common user experience independent upon wired, wireless or remote access. In addition, to simplifying network operations and reducing opex, Cisco is unifying its product suites for One Policy, One Management and One Network to address the BYOD megatrend.  Its approach is to deliver a unified access or holistic solution to IT business leaders that span both wired, wireless and remote network access with a common security,  management and features framework. Cisco calls this new approach Cisco Unified Access. Cisco is also introducing a new converged wired and wireless switch –  Catalyst 3850 switch.   Jeff Reed; Vice President and General Manager Unified Access Group at Cisco Systems joins me to discuss Cisco’s  Unified Access strategy and new Catalyst 3850 switch.

Extreme Networks Addresses Scale Issues with its Open Fabric Software-Defined Networking

No matter where an IT architect looks they are confronted with scaling issues and many times one solution creates another problem.  To address increasing VM density many are expanding broadcast domains with flatter 2-tier architectures only to get bogged down in broadcast issues.  To scale virtualized networks the industry offers VXLAN, but that moves L2 scaling into a multicast-scaling problem.  Software-Defined Network and in particular OpenFlow offers a good approach for provisioning and control but introduces flow oriented architecture scaling issues of its own.  I discuss scaling challenge with Shehzad Merchant Chief Technology Officer at Extreme Networks.

The New Personal Era of Unified Communications

The adoption rate of Unified Communications and Collaboration or UCC has been disappointing.  Its value proposition was rooted in its ability to unify different ways people communicate in the hope that business process would be streamlined, productivity increased and cost reduced.   Some of this is true, but we are entering a new era where most of the underlying UCC assumptions are no longer valid.  Chris Hummel, Chief Commercial Officer at Siemens Enterprise Communications and I believe that a new “people and team” driven UC architecture is emerging that includes mobility, video, social and cloud that’s focused on individual productivity.  In this Lippis Report podcast we discuss a new way to think about and evaluate UCC in the mobile Internet age.

A Realistic Approach To Dynamic Workload Scaling

Dynamic Workload Scaling or Cloud bursting is commonly referred to as the ability to expand or contract workload between two or more virtualized data centers or cloud providers.  It sounds simple enough, but there has not been a practical approach to securely and automatically facilitate elastic IT resources in response to demand.  Cisco Systems is offering one of the most realistic approaches to cloud bursting that leverages the Nexus 7000 and its Application Control Engine or ACE load balancers.  Overlay Transport Virtualization or (OTV) is a feature of the Nexus 7000 and provides Layer 2 connectivity extension across any transport connecting two or more data centers.  ACE provides VM aware load balancing over OTV, which creates the basis for Cisco’s Dynamic Workload Scaling cloud bursting strategy.  I talk with Dave Dhillon Product Marketing Manager at Cisco Systems as we dive into Cisco’s approach to cloud bursting.

Cisco’s Nexus 1000V-based Programmable Virtual Network Overlays

Cisco ONE utilizes the multi-hypervisor Nexus 1000V virtual switch to create virtual network overlays and will be enabling programmability through programmatic interfaces to its virtual supervisor module (VSM), enabling automation-centric provisioning.
